SUMMER JOB OPPORTUNITY IN HERITAGE/CULTURAL FIELD

Position: Museum Program Assistant 

The Canadian Centre for the Great War (CCGW), a Montreal-based heritage collection and research centre operated by the Vimy Foundation, is seeking a Museum Program Assistant for a 4-month period (May to August). Reporting to the Heritage Lead, the Museum Program Assistant will help with planning and rebuilding its public programming activities to establish its community connections since the museum's closure and move in the Spring and Fall of 2024. Please note that due to the nature of the tasks, this is not a remote position. The candidate will be expected to work at the Centre, in Montreal, for the whole duration of the position. Young Canada Works - Heritage Organization (YCW-HO) may reimburse some transportation costs in accordance with established policies.

The hourly rate for this position is $22/hour, for 33 hours per week. 

This is a summer position from May 5 - August 15.

Responsibilities 

  • Gather research and build a new education workshop with presentation and activity, put together a contact list, general marketing plan and execution schedule, ready for use in the new academic year. 
  • Assist in coordinating Spring/Summer tour scheduling, booking system, visitor payment, activity stations, tour script(s) composition/adjustments.
  • Plan weekly/monthly complementary activity stations for tours.
  • Research and write text for future exhibitions and walking tours.
  • Assist with exhibition installation, mount and dismount objects for Spring/Summer season, create labels for new displays, plan Fall exhibition
  • Assist with any potential incoming projects or related tasks

Requirements 

  • Currently enrolled and will be returning next academic term in the following fields of study: museology, applied museum studies, information science, public history; or related areas such as business, fine arts or equivalent demonstrated experience.
  • Entry-level or 1-2 years experience with programming and outreach related activities, some previous experience working with museum's front of house such as front desk, gift shop, education programs, summer activities, docent or volunteering.
  • Previous or related experience coordinating multi-tiered projects, with basic understanding of syncing key details such as scheduling, costing, workflow and execution.
  • 1-2 years of related experience and/or activities within a museum or heritage organisation is preferred.

This is a Young Canada Works job posting. In addition to the minimum job requirements, applicants must also meet the following eligibility criteria in order to be considered for the position. You are eligible if you:

  • are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (note: Non­-Canadian students holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible);
  • are legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • will be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
  • are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
  • will not have another full time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with YCW;
  • have registered as a high school, college, CEGEP or university student (as defined by their educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW work assignment; and
  • intend to return to studies during or after the YCW work assignment.
  • have not previously participated in or been paid under this or any other Career Focus internship program funded under the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy.

Walter S. Allward: Life & Work chronicles the artist’s life from his formative years in Toronto working for the architectural firm Gibson and Simpson to his success as a leading sculptor.
